CENTELLES PALACE IN OLIVA (Valencia)

Mercedes Gómez-Ferrer Lozano

The palace of the family Centelles, counts of Oliva, was located in the upper part of the former village of Oliva (Valencia). It was an old fortress palace with four fortified corner towers, one outstanding quadrangular Homage tower and a central body arrayed around a courtyard, which opened out onto the main quarters with a series of secondary courtyards. This important complex has virtually vanished, and the only remains are one of the towers, which has been restored, along with some of its walls, including a double-shafted windows at number 7 Virgen del Carmen street, and the recollection of its location by the name of Palau (Palace) street, which was opened in the 19th century crossing through the main courtyard. Other remains of the complex are conserved in the Oliva Town Museum, the Santa María de Oliva church and museum, the Hispanic Society in New York and private collections.
