THE COMMODITIES EXCHANGE

Mercedes Gómez-Ferrer Lozano
Arturo Zaragozá Catalán

The commodities exchange is the most celebrated building in Valencia. Not only was it declared a UN World Heritage Site in 1998, its highest praises have also been sung for many aeons now. In 1495, before construction on the building was finished, German traveller Jerome Münzer said of it “…currently a magnificent house is being built there, which they call a commodities exchange, where all types of merchants gather together to discuss matters. It is a tall house, built with cut stone and slender columns… it is finished almost up to the roof… it will have a vegetable garden with a variety of fruits, and a running fountain. It also has an extremely tall tower, with a chapel, where two masses will be said every day… it will be even more airy and beautiful than the Barcelona commodities exchange.” Similar praise was bestowed time and again, even from whom unexpected quarters, such as people with classical training. We should recall how at the end of the 18th century, the strict critic Antonio Ponz called it a “truly magnificent building… the best one in Gothic form” and in 1783 scholar Vicente Noguera said that it was a “majestic model of architecture; though carved in the Gothic style, everything emanates precision, proportion, elevation and grandeur”. The commodities exchange was the magnum opus of the renowned architect Pere Compte and the summary of the architectural investigations carried out during the Gothic period in Valencia throughout the 15th century.

Guests may visit the commodities exchange from Tuesday through Sunday. Please check seasonal timetables. Guided tours are also available.
